The Brooklyn, New York site is only a block away from the streetcorner where four-year-old James Rice was hit by an oncoming car. James was crossing the street, in the crosswalk, with the light. He was hit by a Hummer. He died. The driver of the Hummer was cited for failure to yield.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1432\" title=\"cbk\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/cbk1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"118\" \/><br \/>\nThe surrounding blocks<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/mural-support-on-3rd-ave\/\">two fifth graders<\/a> at PS 124 were crossing 3rd at Ninth Street. The driver who killed them said that he couldn&#8217;t see them. They were too short, never mind that they were crossing with the light, in the crosswalk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2007\/08\/31\/city-promises-5m-in-ped-safety-improvements-at-mural-opening\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1435 aligncenter\" title=\"Distracted driving mural\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mural_sign.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"408\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mural_sign.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mural_sign-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mural_sign-298x185.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a> Details of the mural painted to remember<br \/>\nlives, and to discourage unnecessary deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In response to these tragedies and the larger problem of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/school-parking-signs\">distracted driving<\/a> that they represent, local teenage artists painted a mural in 2007 showing the slain children holding street signs. The signs ask drivers to be careful, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com\/children-at-play-signs\">watch out for kids<\/a>, and to be courteous to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com\/mat\/bike-asset-tags\">cyclists<\/a>. \u00a0The mural, just as beautiful as ever, according to one SmartSign staffer who discovered it on her way to work, also has a poignant message that, unfortunately, remains necessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1434\" title=\"James Rice Mural, warning against distracted driving\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mural-jamesrice1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"500\" \/><br \/>\nRelatives of James Rice standing before a mural dedicated to his memory, at the mural&#8217;s unveiling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; R.
