If a technician is stuck, for example, he or she can simply \u201ctalk with a local person, and if [the company] has this integrated into a pair of smart glasses, you can do it all with one device hands-free\u2026It could potentially save the field service industry alone $1 billion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Google-Glass\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7283\/8743115334_ac68fe0aac.jpg\" alt=\"Google Glass\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hands-off information. The New York Police Department is testing Google Glass to see if it cuts down on the time it takes officers to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/02\/08\/us\/nypd-google-glass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">access information<\/a> on a tablet, smartphone, computer or radio.<\/p>\n<p>Glass could also enable the police to quickly call up suspect information in high-pressure situations. Firefighters have also been tinkering with wearable technology. At present, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/01\/21\/tech\/innovation\/google-glass-firefighter\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Wearable Advanced Sensor Platform<\/a> can track where a firefighter is and his vitals (like breathing and heart rate) in real time.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<br \/>\nWearable technology is also useful for those of us who have desk jobs. The In Pulse Notification Watch can link to your smartphone via Bluetooth and notify you by vibrating if you get a new email, text, or call.<\/p>\n<h3>Location-based uses for wearable tech<\/h3>\n<p>The location-based applications of wearable technology can significantly change the way business is done in industries like manufacturing. For instance, if a manager knows where his workers are, he can quickly reassign them in case there is a snag. Employees who get reassigned would not have to punch in again, they can just go to the area where they now need to work and get back to business.<\/p>\n<p>In the healthcare industry, wearable technology can track specialists and then assign them to the nearest, most critical patients.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in retail, employees could be sent to areas experiencing a sudden customer rush instead of manning near-empty zones. Google Glass can also enable managers to number crunch the time employees spend searching inventory vis-\u00e0-vis the time they spend attending to customers.<\/p>\n<p>Wearable technology also makes use of devices like QR tags. Employees can wear such tags, and customers can scan them to fill out feedback surveys. Again, this will provide valuable insight into employee performance.<\/p>\n<h3>How wearable tech will affect work-life balance<\/h3>\n<p>With wearable technology, the boundaries between work and personal life will only get more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2014\/03\/24\/looking-ahead-to-wearable-tech-in-the-workplace-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">porous<\/a>. While on one hand flextime will increase, on the other, detaching yourself from work when spending time with family may become more difficult.<\/p>\n<h3>How companies should react<\/h3>\n<p>Companies will need to hammer out policies that take wearable technology into account, especially as it begins to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/capitalbusiness\/recalls-lawsuits-traffic-tickets--wearable-tech-is-starting-to-get-attention-from-legal-system\/2014\/02\/28\/034eb63a-9e5d-11e3-b8d8-94577ff66b28_story.html?utm_term=.e7c58d6c8dca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draw attention<\/a> from lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are just starting to understand what they can and can&#8217;t do, with the predominant opinion being positive. Passing new laws now could stifle innovation, or worse, they won&#8217;t focus on the real issues that don&#8217;t know about yet,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2014\/02\/28\/google-takes-on-laws-that-ban-wearable-technology.aspx\">says<\/a>\u00a0Syracuse University\u00a0journalism professor Dan Pacheco.<\/p>\n<p>Still, companies can start thinking about policies on existing wearable technology.
