Its landmarks are its roads: Sunset Boulevard, the Pacific Coast Highway, Rodeo Drive. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V4347ZE0NQM\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire comedy sketches <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been made about Angelenos\u2019 love affair with the automobile. \u00a0But it wasn\u2019t always this way. \u00a0In 1900, Los Angeles had the first elevated \u201ccycleway\u201d in the world.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the turn of the 20th century, when Los Angeles was a budding metropolis, businessman Horace Dobbins and his partner, former California Governor Henry Markham, decided that the future of transportation was the bicycle, and bought the land for an elevated bicycle toll road between Los Angeles and the suburb of Pasadena, six miles away. The California Cycleway was born.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meant to be a \u201cparadise for wheelmen,\u201d the Cycleway was priced to undercut the Pacific Electric Railway. \u00a0A one-way ride on the Cycleway would cost 10 cents, while the same trip on the Pacific Electric \u00a0streetcars was 25 cents. \u00a0It was built from Oregon pine, with its first 1 \u00bc mile segment opening New Year\u2019s Day of 1900. Markham and Dobbins\u2019 idea was ultimately to build amusements, hotels, and real estate developments along the route. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8206\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:California_Cycleway_and_Pasadena_Grand_Opera_House_1902.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8206\" class=\"wp-image-8206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/California_Cycleway_and_Pasadena_Grand_Opera_House_1902.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/California_Cycleway_and_Pasadena_Grand_Opera_House_1902.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/California_Cycleway_and_Pasadena_Grand_Opera_House_1902-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/California_Cycleway_and_Pasadena_Grand_Opera_House_1902-768x597.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via Los Angeles Public Library (Wikimedia Commons)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It never came to be. \u00a0In an era when transportation was generally a profitable, privately-owned enterprise, the Cycleway never turned a profit and the first segment of the Cycleway was the only part built. \u00a0By October of 1900, Dobbins told the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Times <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the expected hordes of cyclists had not materialized. \u00a0The 1 \u00bc mile initial segment was located only in Pasadena, and went only from the Santa Fe railway station to the Raymond Hotel&#8211; useful for the well-heeled tourists who patronized the hotels, but utterly useless for commuters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8207 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/shutterstock_177979286-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/shutterstock_177979286-1.jpg 672w, https:\/\/www.smartsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/shutterstock_177979286-1-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cycleway was gradually dismantled over the next couple decades, as the derelict structure became an eyesore. \u00a0Dobbins later tried to turn his land easement into a railway line for streetcars. \u00a0This, too, was unsuccessful. \u00a0In 1917 Dobbins ultimately sold his land interests to the City of Pasadena. \u00a0The City of Pasadena, in turn, used the land to build roads. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, in a cosmic irony, much of the old Cycleway route was later used to build the Arroyo Seco Parkway, the first freeway built west of the Mississippi.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles is the car capital of America.
