SmartSign digital detoxes on National Day of Unplugging

National Day of Unplugging unites thousands of people looking to recharge by taking a break from the digital world.

The National Day of Unplugging unites thousands of people looking to recharge by taking a break from the digital world.

We’re so glued to our gadgets, that the mere thought of being separated from them provokes anxiety and frustration. “Fashionably late” would no doubt morph into “helplessly late” without our smartphones showing us both the way and the time.

However, tech habits can take a toll on our ability to have wholehearted, meaningful experiences. One solution that’s been around for hundreds of years in some communities has recently carved out a space in popular culture: a full day of eliminating interaction with technology and the digital world.

As someone who shuts off from the modern world every week, I’m aware of the many benefits of unplugging. However, I understand that others may be skeptical of disrupting the digitally-charged routine they find so comforting. This is why campaigns like the National Day of Unplugging are essential. This Friday,  you can participate in a day of digital detoxing by writing down why you’re inspired to unplug, taking a photo, and submitting it to the website’s gallery. The site shows a variety of messages from folks across the globe, all united in the same mission.

A group of us here at SmartSign are looking forward to joining the thousands of others who will be unplugging on March 6-7, sundown to sundown. Relaxing, cuddling, Muay Thai, making cupcakes, sleeping, reading, and cooking for family are some of the reasons we’re inspired to disconnect from the digital world.

Although you might miss a Facebook notification or text message, unplugging can clue you into parts of your life you’ve take for granted, help you discover new connections, and inspire you to reignite ones you’ve forgotten about. Are you with us?
